Story:

Walter (Vishal) and Dandalu Saami (Arya) are thieves and also stepbrothers. They are so much attached to Highness (GM Kumar) who has no one to take care of except Walter and Saami. Highness is like the protector of that village. He lives life like a king. One day Highness confronts with a wrongdoer (RK), who comes to seek revenge. What happens next forms the climax of this film.

Analysis:

Bala who never tried his hand at comedy tried to make a comedy entertainer with some typical characters that are seen in rural Tamilnadu. The take off of the movie and the introduction of characters is good. The flow seems smooth until a point and suddenly we start feeling that this film is heading nowhere. The director never raises a conflict even at the interval point.

We feel that Bala is trying to make a time pass entertainer where the conflict will only be raised in the second half of the film. But even in the second half the story never moves from the starting point. Only towards the end there enters a negative character any person with head on shoulders would predict what happens next.

This is by far the weakest movie that Bala has ever made. It neither has a script nor a strong base. All the characters are underdeveloped. Most of the scenes are irrelevant to the subject. Also the best parts of the film resemble Siva Putrudu (Pitamagan) and hence lack any freshness.

Real Bala is only seen in the climax scenes but that too seems very forced and completely unwanted. The film ends abruptly and that is another drawback.

Performances:

Vishal steals the show with his wonderful performance. He has put in so much pain and efforts to play this character. His performance in the scene where he shows navarasas stands as a strong example for his talent. Arya was not given much importance. He did his part well. Janani Iyer is cute and Madhu Shalini doesn’t have much scope. GM Kumar’s performance is natural. Ambika and Prabha lived up to their characters. Rest of the star cast is fine with their job.

Tehnicalities:

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is good. Although there aren’t any songs that can be remembered, his background score is brilliant. Aurthur A Wilson’s cinematography is topnotch. Suresh Urs editing is okay.

Bala penned the story and screenplay and he has utterly failed in this department. Although the director in him came to rescue the film at times, the writing has let the film down. Bala’s mark can be seen in few scenes but it will disappoint his fans on a whole due to soulless and pointless script.

Silambattam is a mixture of different emotions of the hero and Simbhu has well adapted to the role in accordance with the Character. The movie is about the bad and the good which is exists in the society. Saravanan has carved the movie with much needed proficiency and has churned the messages out of it. The entertainment element is well enlightened with the main core of the story and is presented in a novel way.

Story

Vichu (Simbu) is a quiet well learnt priest in a village who is well versed in the Vedic literature and is brought up by his maternal Grandfather (Nedumudi Venu) who is also the priest head in the village. For some specific reason s which happened in the past, Venu brought up his grandson in a tender way and has made him recite Vedic mantras and has made him look like an innocent goat. But the real inner feelings of Vichu are well visible in eyes and it is clear that he is groomed well in a soft spoken way instead of his real instinct.

Vichu always tolerates all sorts of injustice done to him by others and gives them a polite and tolerant reply. The temple priest is seen as a cow that is always patient and also tolerable to all sorts of nuisances targeted towards him. Vichu calmly concludes his daily chores of Village priest rituals and looks after the temple, thus fulfilling his grandfather’s sayings.

Vichu has a soft corner on a girl named Janu (Sana) with whom he mingles closely. She makes fun of him and his deeds and asks him to withstand the evil society with dare and courage. She teases him with some jokes and Vichu loves the company of Janu as she makes him feel that he is in his youth and is still in his growing years.

Incidentally, Vichu witnesses a bunch of bad goons making nuisance in the temple premises. However, since he is abided by his grandfather’s sayings, Vichu remains silent on this issue. But Vichus patience goes up to a saturation point and suddenly the man who was sleeping in him rises. He bashes up the goons and to surprise all makes the fight in a powerful way. The victim who is targeted by the bad goons is surprised to see Vichu’s new avatar.

Then a flash back comes on to the reel and the audiences are kept on their toes. The movie Silambattam then goes into the past of two villages who are in revenge on each other. Muthuvel (Prabhu) and Veeraiyan (Ponvannan) are the two village heads and they fight with each others with the help of their groups. Veeraiyan wants to claim back his land which was donated to the village poor and needy. He wants it back at any cost and so harasses the poor. Muthuvel and his brother Tamizh (Simbhu) are rivals to Veeraiyan as they are against injustice.

The fights turn into deadly violence and soon Muthuvel and Tamizh face Veeraiyan. On the other hand Gayatri (Sneha) is the wife of Tamizh who are featured in shot and sweet romances in between.

The battle between the good and bad goes on and Muthuvel along with his son is pared in the battle leaving everyone dead in the massacre. Vichu happens to be the son of Sneha born to Tamizh and so his maternal grandfather makes him stay away from the dreaded violence of the two villages and makes him grow like a cow.

The rest of the story is about Vichu and how he takes on the evil deeds of Veeraiyan and how he ends the bad in the temple and his home town is all about Silambattam.

Performances

Silambattam Vichu which is the character played by Simbhu is very well played by the young actor. Silambarasan succeeds in two roles of Tamizh and Vichu and gains the audiences applauses.

Sana Khan acts in a well disciplined role and she is limited to as a glam doll who dances with the hero. Actress Sneha bei9ng a senior to Sana hogs the limelight as her superb acting and especially in the scene where she gives her womanhood to Tamizh is excellent. Her way of acting, expressions and dialogue delivery is impeccable.

The rest of the actors are also well apt for the characters and do their acting in a superb way.

Coming to the music, Macha Macha song is superb and is a mass duet canned on Sneha and Simbhu. The rest of the songs are good.

Sarvanan gets all the praises as his story and screenplay is appluadable in Silambattam. His way of narration is dealt with some excellent camera work by Mathi and so the movie has come up with a hit formula.

On the whole the movie Silambattam is well entertaining and is passable and at the end the audiences feel that they have invested their bucks on a good movie.
